“In this book I journey through my three parents’ lives (and further back) and also through my own life up to the birth of our first son Jonathan in 1971. It is an intercontinental journey of admiration and amazement, of surprises and sorrows.
An old labourer was walking home one night in the 1870s with the famous Cornish Methodist preacher Mark Guy Pearse. The labourer worked alone in his fields and was much given to silence. Finally he turned to Pearce and said, “I been thinkin’ that if you and me only knew all about everybody else, there is nobody in the world that you and me would change with.” In this story I too slow down and pay attention (memories are only useful to those who have hope) to what has made me the person I am becoming.”
